Class V: Science [Ch-3 Movement and Breathing of Animals]

 Define the terms

  1. Forelimbs- Front two limbs of animals.

  2. Hindlimbs- Two limbs attached to the lower end of the body.

  3. Spiracles- Holes on the body of insects which help them to breath.

  4. Trachea- Network of air tubes that insects have all over the body.

Answer in one line.

  1. Name the largest living land animal?

Ans. The Bull African Elephant is the largest living land animal.

  1. Name the tallest land animal?

Ans. Giraffes are the tallest land animal.

  1. How do reptiles breathe?

Ans. Reptiles breathe through lungs.

  1. How do land animals move?

Ans. Land animals move with the help of their limbs.

  1. From where do aquatic animals get oxygen to breathe?

Ans. The aquatic animals take in the oxygen dissolved in water to breathe.

Answer in short:

  1. Describe the limbs of land animals.

Ans. Animals on land have four limbs. The front two limbs are called forelimbs. The two at the back are called hindlimbs

  1. How do insects breathe?

Ans. Insects have holes on their bodies called spiracles which help them to breathe.

  1. How is the breathing of a tadpole different from the breathing of a fewg?

Ans. A tadpole breathes through its gills in water but a frog breathes through its lungs on land and through its moist skin in water.

Answer in detail:

  1. How do whales and dolphins breathe?

Ans. i) Whales and dolphins have lungs to breathe.

ii) They come to the surface of water to inhale oxygen.

iii) They exhale carbon dioxide through their nostrils (also called blowholes) in the water.

  1. Snakes do not have legs then how do they move?

Ans. Snakes have scales on their underside of the bodies which are attached to their ribs. These scales act like feet and ribs act like legs which enables the snake to move.

Give reason:

  1. Reptiles crawl on land.

Ans. Reptiles have limbs to move but they crawl on their bellies on land to lay eggs.

  1. Snakes find it easy to move on rough ground.

Ans. Snakes have scales or plates which help them to move and because of this, snakes find it easy to move on rough ground.

  1. Humans are a higher form of animals.

Ans. Because-

i) They use their feet to balance and stand erect.

ii) The legs help to walk.

iii) Each hand helps to hold things.

iv) Humans have a highly developed brain to think.

Experiment Based Question

AIM- To observe the breathing rate of people after various activities

MATERIAL REQUIRED- Balloon, Measuring tape

PROCEDURE

i) Take a balloon and inflate it through mouth and observe the circumference.

ii) Now, jump 15 times and then again inflate the balloon and observe the difference.

  1. What happens to lungs during inflation?

Ans. Lungs expand during inflation.

  1. Name the gas released into the balloon through the mouth?

Ans. Carbon dioxide.

  1. What happens to the breathing rate after physical exercise (jumping) ?

Ans. Breathing rate increases after physical exercise.

Story Based Question

Ajay went for a picnic with his family. During his visit to goa, he got excited to see dolphins but he was confused to see that dolphins were coming to the surface of water whereas other fishes were swimming in the water only.

Now, let's see if you can answer his questions.

  1. Why were dolphins coming to the surface of the water again and again?

Ans. Dolphins are water animals but they are mammals. They have lungs and they come to the surface of water to inhale oxygen.

  1. How do fishes breathe?
