1. How do maps differ from the globe?

Ans. i) Globe is a model of the earth whereas a map is a representation of the earth on a flat surface like paper. 

ii) Globe is small in size and all the details cannot be shown on it whereas on a map we can use scale and symbols or keys to represent different features.

2. How do find the directions on the map?

Ans. To find the directions on the map, stand in front of it.

i) The top of the map shows the north direction.

ii) The bottom shows the south direction.

iii) Towards your right is the east direction.

iv) Towards your left is the west direction.

3. How is the mariner's compass useful for the sailors?

Ans. i) A compass used by a sailor to find direction in the open oceans is called the mariner compass.

ii) It is like a watch.

iii) It has a magnetic needle that always points forward in the north direction.

4. What are oceans? Name the five oceans.

Ans. Very large water bodies are called oceans. The five oceans are- the pacific ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, the southern ocean, and the arctic ocean.

5. Name the seven continents on the surface of the earth.

Ans. The seven continents are- Asia, Africa, Antarctica, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America.
